What Is A Fig
A fig tree (Ficus carica) is a large shrub or small tree native to southwest Asia and the eastern Mediterranean region. Fig Trees bear the delicious fig which is a treat for both humans ans the birds and animals who can get to them.

Figs are also known for their:
- Mild laxative effect due to its high fibre content.
- Soothing effect on irritated passages due to soothing effect on inflamed mucous membranes.
- Great source of vitamin B6.
- Dried figs are rich in calcium, potassium, magnesium, copper, manganese and Vitamin K.
Fig Varieties
- Calimyrna fig: this fig has a golden tender skin with a creamy nutty flavored center. Calimyrnas are best eaten whole and fresh.
- Mission fig: This fig has a deep purple skin and light purple flesh. When dried, mission figs turn a dark black. These figs are good for cooking.
- Kadota fig: This is an American-style fig with a thick amber skin. The flesh is creamy and almost seedless and should be peeled before eaten. Kadotas are often canned or dried.
- Brown turkey fig: This fig has a copper-colored skin with a purplish tint. The white flesh becomes almost pink in the center. These figs should only be eaten fresh.
How To Eat Figs
My favorite way to eat Figs is to simply pick, wash and eat. The flavors are simply wonderful and is a great healthy snack idea.
Many also make jams, dry them for longer storage or make desserts out of them. The Fig is a very versatile fruit so let your mind run free.
